When a user deposits ETH into the Lido protocol, that ETH is distributed across a set of professional node operators who run the validators. The user receives stETH, a liquid staking token whose balance automatically grows with the staking rewards. stETH is freely transferable and can be used in DeFi protocols. LDO holders vote on changes to the protocol through Snapshot and the DAO.

Lido consists of smart contracts on Ethereum that handle deposits, validator selection and the issuance of stETH. The protocol works with multiple professional node operators to avoid centralisation.
