What is an XRP wallet?
You can think of a wallet as your personal access to the XRP network. You use it to receive, store and send XRP. The actual XRP is recorded on the XRP Ledger, a public system that keeps track of every transaction.
The wallet stores the data that proves the XRP at your address belongs to you. Without that access, you cannot do anything with your coins.
Your wallet works with two keys.
Your public key is your XRP address. It always starts with the letter "r". You share it with others to receive XRP. You can pass it on without risk, just like a bank account number.
Your private key is your secret key. With it you manage your XRP. Always keep it to yourself. Whoever has this key has access to your wallet. Lose it and you can no longer reach your XRP.
Term | What it means |
|---|---|
Public key | Your XRP address, always starts with "r". Share with others to receive XRP. |
Private key | The secret code that gives access to your XRP. Never share, never store digitally. |
Seed phrase | A series of 12 or 24 words you can use to restore your wallet. Whoever has these words has access to your XRP. |
Destination tag | An extra code that is sometimes required when sending XRP, especially to exchanges. |
Network fee | The cost of a transaction on the XRP network (usually very low). |
Wallet reserve | A minimum amount of XRP that must remain in your wallet as a technical requirement of the XRP Ledger. |
How do I manage my XRP?
The XRP Ledger records every transaction. When you buy XRP, it is linked to your address on the network. Your wallet gives you access to that address using unique keys.
Those keys decide who is in control. Only you can send XRP from your address. Without that access, you cannot manage anything.
Which XRP wallet should I choose?
There are three types of wallets. The best choice depends on how much XRP you have and how actively you use it.
Our recommendation
Just getting started? A mobile wallet is the easiest choice. Use XRP more often or want more functionality? Then a desktop or browser wallet is handy. For larger amounts or long-term storage, a hardware wallet is the best option. Many users combine multiple wallets: one for daily use and one for storage.

Receive and send XRP
To receive XRP, share your wallet address. To send XRP, enter the recipient's address. Note: for some addresses, such as those of exchanges, a destination tag is required.
Receive: open your wallet, go to "Receive" and copy your wallet address. That address always starts with "r". Send it to the sender. Send: go to "Send", paste the recipient's address and check whether a destination tag is required.
Always copy and paste the address. Never type it manually. XRP transactions are irreversible: once sent, always sent.
Destination tag: do not forget
A destination tag is a number you must include with some transactions. Exchanges use it to determine which customer a transaction is for. Send XRP to an exchange without the correct destination tag? Your XRP can end up on the wrong account. For every transaction to an exchange, check whether a destination tag is required.
Watch out with hardware wallets
Always verify your wallet address on the screen of the device itself. An address that looks correct in your browser may have been altered by malware. The screen of your hardware wallet always shows the real address.
How do you keep your wallet safe?
You are responsible for the security of your wallet yourself. A few simple rules make mistakes or losses much less likely.
- Strong PIN or password: pick a combination you remember but that is hard to guess. Avoid personal details such as your date of birth or simple sequences.
- Seed phrase on paper: always write your recovery phrase by hand and store it in a safe place. Never store it digitally and share it with no one.
- Two-factor authentication (2FA): use an authenticator app like Google Authenticator or Authy. That way your wallet stays protected, even if your password is intercepted.
- Only official software: download wallets and updates only through the official website or app store of the developer. Fake apps and extensions are common and hard to spot.
- Check addresses carefully: malware can change addresses in your browser or app. Always check the address before confirming a transaction.
- For larger amounts, a hardware wallet is the safest choice. Your keys stay offline and out of reach of hackers.
Tip: always make a backup of your wallet
Lost your device or lost your access? With your seed phrase you restore your wallet on any new device. It does not matter which device or which app: the phrase restores everything.
Important rules
- Write down each word in the order the wallet shows. Do not type, do not photograph.
- No cloud storage, no screenshot, no email. Only physical.
- A website asking for your seed phrase? Close the page. No real wallet ever does that.
- Your seed phrase always belongs to you. Never share it with anyone. It is the access to your coins.
- Keep at least two physical copies in different places.
- Consider a metal backup of titanium or steel as protection against fire and water.
Lost your device but still have your seed phrase? You can restore your wallet. Lost both? Then your XRP is no longer accessible.
