What is Kaspa?
Kaspa (KAS) is a decentralized digital currency launched on 7 November 2021. It allows users to send value quickly and at low cost, without a bank or intermediary. Instead of a traditional blockchain, Kaspa uses a smarter structure: rather than one at a time, multiple blocks are created and processed simultaneously. This makes the network significantly faster than traditional Proof-of-Work networks. The maximum supply of KAS is set at 28.7 billion coins, nearly all of which are already in circulation through open mining.

How does Kaspa work?
Kaspa operates on a BlockDAG (Directed Acyclic Graph). In a traditional blockchain, blocks are added one at a time, like links in a chain. In Kaspa, multiple blocks can be created and confirmed simultaneously. This is made possible by the GHOSTDAG protocol: a consensus mechanism that does not discard parallel blocks, but processes and orders them. The result is a network capable of ten blocks per second, with confirmation times of less than one second. Kaspa uses Proof-of-Work with the kHeavyHash algorithm, combining the security of PoW with a much higher throughput than Bitcoin.

The technology behind Kaspa
Kaspa combines the trusted Proof-of-Work mechanism with an innovative block structure. Instead of a linear chain of blocks, Kaspa uses a BlockDAG: a network of blocks that arise in parallel and are ordered via the GHOSTDAG protocol. Following the Crescendo update (May 2025), the network processes ten blocks per second. Confirmation times are determined by internet latency, not by the protocol itself. This makes Kaspa one of the fastest Proof-of-Work networks in the world.
The Kaspa ecosystem
The ecosystem around Kaspa consists of miners, developers and users who send and receive KAS. Kaspa had no pre-mine: all KAS entered circulation through open mining, without a presale or venture capital. The project is open source and community-driven, with no central organization or shareholders. The issuance of new KAS gradually decreases via a unique emission model based on the 12 notes of the musical scale. Each month the block reward decreases slightly, so the total supply never exceeds 28.7 billion KAS.
Who is the founder of Kaspa?
Kaspa was developed by Yonatan Sompolinsky, a computer scientist and one of the authors of the GHOSTDAG protocol. Sompolinsky published his research on BlockDAG consensus protocols years before Kaspa was launched. On 7 November 2021, the Kaspa network went live, without a pre-mine, without a presale and without involvement from venture capital firms. All KAS were put into circulation through open mining.
