What is Cosmos?
Cosmos is a network of independent blockchains that can communicate with each other through the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol. The project is often described as the 'internet of blockchains'. The native token, ATOM, is used for staking, governance and transaction fees on the Cosmos Hub.

How does Cosmos work?
Cosmos uses the Tendermint consensus algorithm, a Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) Proof-of-Stake system. Validators stake ATOM to validate transactions and produce new blocks. Through the IBC protocol, tokens and data can be exchanged between different Cosmos blockchains.
The token
Ticker: ATOM
Category: Layer 1 / Interoperability
Blockchain: Cosmos Hub
Protocol: Tendermint (Proof of Stake)
Year of launch: 2019
The technology behind Cosmos
Cosmos provides developers with the Cosmos SDK, a framework for building their own blockchains. Tendermint provides fast finality and high throughput. The IBC protocol allows different blockchains to be connected securely, making interoperability a core feature of Cosmos.
The Cosmos ecosystem
The Cosmos ecosystem consists of hundreds of independent chains built on the Cosmos SDK, including well-known projects like Osmosis, Celestia and dYdX. The Cosmos Hub acts as a central connection point and facilitates transfers between connected chains.
Who founded Cosmos?
Cosmos was conceived in 2014 by Jae Kwon and Ethan Buchman, who also developed the Tendermint consensus algorithm. The project is further developed by various organisations, including the Interchain Foundation and All in Bits (formerly Tendermint Inc.).
